A Birth Doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth.  A Birth Doula recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life and she understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor.  She assists each mother in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth and stays with her throughout the labor.  A Birth Doula provides an objective viewpoint and facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers. A birth doula is an expert in supporting the whole family through labor. At various points in every labor. Whether you are a first time mom or have several children at home. A birth double can continue care as a postpartum doula will make your life easier in the days after your baby is born by caring for you and your baby.

Birth Doulas will:

• Understand the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor.

• Access helpful information for the expectant, laboring and postpartum parent/s to assist in their decision making.

• Work in cooperation with physicians, midwives, nurses, and the partners and families of laboring and postpartum women.

• Facilitate communication between the laboring woman, her partner, and clinical care providers.

• Breast-feeding support for your baby’s first feeding

• Assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for the birth.

• Stays by the side of the laboring woman and newborn in the hospital.

• Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective view, and assistance to the woman in getting the information she needs to make good decisions.

• Allows the woman’s partner to participate at their comfort level.

• Most physicians spend very little time with the mother during her labor, so we can be especially helpful for labor support.

Partner Big Role and Support:

It’s exciting to imagine the unique skills and gifts you’re going to bring to this amazing newborn. You play an essential role in providing support for the baby’s mother. A doula cannot make some of the unique contributions that the partner makes. Such contributions include an intimate knowledge of the woman, and the love for her and the baby. Some Partner may feel over whelmed with the expectations to be instant experts and decision makers in regards to childbirth. That type of expectation is unrealistic for anyone who has little prior knowledge of birth or medical procedures. With this expectation, some partners can feel helpless and distressed and are not able to provide the confident reassurance and constant nurturing that a woman in labor needs. With a doula present, the pressure on the partner is decreased and they are able to participate at their own level of comfort. Partners often feel relieved when they know they have a doula there to help their love ones and they actually enjoy the experience much more!
